Mexico's national customs agency, ANAM, says it is stepping up checks on imports from Asia to catch goods declared at false values or with a false country of origin, The Rio Times reports. An ANAM director, Estefanía Capdevielle, said on Wednesday that Mexico now exchanges information with Asian countries before shipments arrive, so cargo reaches customs already flagged.
Officials are targeting undervaluation, which reduces duties paid, and goods relabelled as coming from countries with lower tariffs. Staff check whether a supplier's stated factory location is plausible, including by using online maps, and importers must file an electronic value declaration so goods can be traced to the final buyer. The move comes as Mexico renegotiates the USMCA trade pact with the United States and Canada, with Washington pressing for proof that Chinese goods cannot enter North America under false labels.
