Albertans have voted decisively to remain part of Canada, according to early referendum results reported by Global News.
By midnight on Monday, about 76 per cent of counted ballots, 883,641 votes, backed staying in Canada, against 278,062 in favour of starting the legal process towards a binding vote on leaving. All votes must be counted by hand within 48 hours, and the separation question was counted first. Results were delayed by more than three hours because some polling stations opened late.
The question was one of ten on the ballot and was added in May by Premier Danielle Smith after a court quashed a separatist petition. Interest was high, with more than 1.35 million votes cast in advance polls and by mail. Polls throughout 2026 had shown about 70 per cent of Albertans wanting to stay.
