Anchorage artist plans children’s art hive after flood of election mail

·

An Anchorage woman who was dismayed by the amount of political mail arriving at her home is turning the experience into a community art project, Alaska's News Source reports. Brooke McLaughlin had begun collecting campaign leaflets from friends and family with the idea of covering a hive-shaped structure with them.

She has since changed her plans, saying she did not want divisive material to be part of the project. Instead, the inside of the hive will be lined with 300 triangular panels, each decorated with artwork by a school class or community group about what community means to them. The structure will be made from recycled materials and have a wheelchair-accessible door. McLaughlin said she still hopes to recycle the mailers, possibly into paper for thank-you notes, and wants schools and groups to sign up by 1 December.
