Canada's aluminium producers believe the results of the US midterm elections could help end the trade dispute with Washington, CTV News reports. Jean Simard, head of the Aluminum Association of Canada, said on Wednesday that American voters had shown frustration with the economic effects of US trade policy, which could add pressure to roll back tariffs.
Canada produces about 3.3 million tonnes of aluminium a year and exports roughly 90 per cent of it, mostly to the United States in the past. US tariffs of 50 per cent have pushed Canadian producers to send more metal to Europe. Simard said he was more optimistic than ever. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business also hoped for a lasting deal. However, Andreas Schotter of Western University's Ivey Business School warned businesses not to expect a rapid change in US policy.
