Republican midterm defeat may limit future US financial help for Argentina

·

The Republican Party's losses in the US midterm elections could make it harder for Donald Trump to repeat the financial support he gave Argentina's President Javier Milei in 2025, the Buenos Aires Times reports, citing the CEPA think tank. Democrats, who opposed that intervention and have now won both chambers of Congress, have already put forward proposals to restrict such help.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said he would be willing to do a similar deal again, arguing that the earlier support made money for the United States. The paper notes that ties between the two countries have deepened through US investment in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale field, and that Washington has pressed Buenos Aires to limit links with China. CEPA said Trump remains Milei's main ally but is now politically weaker ahead of Argentina's election next year.
