At least 40 people were reportedly injured and several are missing after violence broke out at a campaign rally for Nigeria's governing All Progressives Congress in Lafia, capital of Nasarawa State, Premium Times reports. Vice President Kashim Shettima was among those attending.
According to the report, trouble began when young people wearing APC clothing chanted in support of Adamu Abubakar, a former police chief who is the Social Democratic Party's candidate for governor. This led to clashes with security personnel and supporters of the APC governorship candidate, Aliyu Wadada, with armed youths from both sides fighting. Security forces used tear gas and the rally was ended early. The state government blamed former governor Umaru Al-Makura and Abubakar for the unrest and ordered the State Security Service to investigate. Security has been stepped up across the town.
