Rights group says Israeli restrictions block care for more than 1,100 child amputees in Gaza

·

Geneva-based rights group Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor says Israeli limits on travel and medical evacuations are stopping child amputees in Gaza from getting specialist treatment abroad, Al Jazeera reports. The group said on Wednesday that 1,134 children in Gaza had lost limbs as a result of Israeli attacks, and that few were receiving the long-term care they need.

According to the World Health Organization, 2,300 amputees, adults and children, were assessed for treatment between September 2024 and May 2026, but only around 500 were fitted with permanent prosthetics. Euro-Med said Gaza has just eight certified prosthetics specialists and that Israeli restrictions prevent the import of equipment to make limbs and limit entry permits for specialist teams. It warned that missing follow-up care as children grow could cause lasting pain and mobility problems.
