Telstra apologises after customers receive phantom missed call alerts

·

Telstra has apologised after thousands of its mobile customers reported receiving notifications of missed calls and voicemails that they had not actually missed, some dating back several days, Guardian Australia reports. The company said a fault with its MessageBank voicemail service was found on Wednesday and fixed overnight.

Telstra said it was still investigating the cause but that the problem was technical and not the result of a hack or other outside interference. It said emergency Triple Zero calls, ordinary voice calls and mobile data were not affected. More than 3,000 confused users commented on the company's Facebook page, with some describing alerts suggesting they had been called by people sitting beside them. Telstra, which has 26 million mobile services, suffered a major nationwide outage in July that it blamed on a software defect.
