Luis Pedro Marco de la Peña, president of Spain's state rail infrastructure company Adif, has handed his resignation to the new transport minister, Carlos Cuerpo, Politico Europe reports. A Spanish government official confirmed the move, which was first reported by local media.
Adif manages the country's rail network, signalling and traffic control, and has faced intense scrutiny since last week's crash near Urda in the province of Toledo, in which 69 people died. The resignation is the first significant step taken by Cuerpo since he replaced Óscar Puente, who stepped down as transport minister on Tuesday night after a lengthy hearing before a standing committee of Congress at which both allies and opponents of the government called on him to go.
