Anchorage double murderer Brian Smith convicted of lying to obtain US citizenship

·

Brian Smith, a South African-born man serving a 226-year sentence for murdering two Alaska Native women in Anchorage, has been convicted of unlawfully obtaining US citizenship, Daily Maverick reports.

Smith was found guilty in 2024 of killing Kathleen Jo Henry and Veronica Abouchuk between 2018 and early 2019, along with torture and sexual misconduct charges. When he applied for citizenship later in 2019, he answered no under oath to questions about whether he had been involved in killing or torturing anyone, the US Attorney's Office said.

He is due to be sentenced in February and faces up to 20 years in prison and loss of his citizenship. Michael Heyman, the US Attorney for Alaska, said it was too early to say whether Smith would be deported, which would need a separate immigration hearing. Smith, who represented himself, claims he was forced to confess.
