A 76-year-old Army veteran and his wife have begun their longest Poppy Express journey yet, selling poppies to train passengers to raise money for the Royal British Legion, GB News reports.
Denis and Barbara Scaife, from Bridlington in East Yorkshire, raised £37,000 last year by travelling the East Coast Main Line for 48 hours. This year, in their 11th year of the challenge, they plan to cover about 1,000 miles over two days, from Hull to London, up the West Coast to Stirling, then via Edinburgh back to London and on to Retford.
It is the first time the fundraiser has reached the West Coast route. Mr Scaife, a former Royal Engineer and police sergeant, has had serious health problems this year but said the appeal mattered to him because of his service background.
