Australia’s big-city cemeteries face running out of burial space within a decade

·

Several cemeteries in Australia's major cities expect to run out of room for new burials within the next ten years, SBS News reports.

Metropolitan Memorial Parks, which runs eight Crown land cemeteries in New South Wales including Sydney's vast Rookwood Cemetery, says nearly all of them are likely to be full by the early 2030s. The head of the Australasian Cemeteries and Crematoria Association said cities had expanded without new cemeteries being built, and that residents often object to having one nearby.

Between 75 and 85 per cent of Australians are now cremated, but some faiths, including Islam and Judaism, do not permit cremation. A New South Wales proposal to turn a golf club in Lidcombe into a cemetery has drawn local criticism over flood risk.
