A new diagnostic and imaging centre has opened at the International Blantyre Cancer Centre in Malawi, aiming to end the practice of sending patients' samples to the United States, India and China for testing, AllAfrica reports.
The facility, opened on Friday by philanthropist Thomson Mpinganjira, has CT and MRI scanners, mammography, X-ray and 4D ultrasound equipment. Mpinganjira said it can return results within two hours and screen for up to 100 diseases at once; the report notes those claims are his and are yet to be tested.
Health officials say the government spends more than K3 billion a year sending patients abroad for care. His family foundation has raised its commitment to the project to K25.5 billion. The cancer centre, opened in March 2024, treated 336 patients in its first year, almost a third of them from neighbouring countries.
