Just over two thirds of people in Poland want the country's strict abortion law relaxed, but most stop short of backing abortion on demand, according to a new poll reported by Notes from Poland.
The SW Research survey for the newspaper Rzeczpospolita found 67.2% in favour of liberalisation. Of those, 37.7% of all respondents backed abortion on request up to 12 weeks, while 29.5% preferred returning to the rules in place before a 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that banned terminations for severe foetal defects. Support was higher among women than men.
The poll follows protests last week and a vote in the Sejm, the lower house, to reverse the 2020 ruling. That legislation could be vetoed by President Karol Nawrocki, who is aligned with the right-wing opposition. The issue also divides Prime Minister Donald Tusk's governing coalition.
