A 61-year-old Canadian citizen who had lived in Point Roberts, Washington, on a US green card for 14 years died at home on 18 October after refusing to be taken to hospital, because reaching one meant crossing the Canadian border, CTV News reports.
Paige Adamson had been held by US immigration officials for six hours last month on suspicion of registering and voting in a Washington state election, which her son and her lawyer say she did not do. Facing a deportation hearing, she had been advised not to leave the United States. After a fall, paramedics told her she needed hospital care, which would have meant travelling through Canada to Bellingham.
Blaine immigration lawyer Len Saunders said he had seen a rise in Canadian green card holders accused of voting, many of whom were unknowingly registered when getting state driving licences.
