At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in Saturday's explosion and fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta, Global News reported, citing several Canadian Armed Forces sources, according to the National Post. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of dead.
National Defence said a fire in a training area spread beyond its boundaries at about 4pm. The Chief of the Defence Staff, General Jennie Carignan, said identification of the dead and notification of their families had begun. Sources told Global News a gas line or well was struck during live-fire training and strong winds drove the blaze.
Several Edmonton hospitals declared mass-casualty alerts, and an emergency doctor described the scale as a rare disaster. A wildfire south of Wainwright was reported to be held by Sunday morning.
