Chancellor John Healey has told the government's energy department that money will only go to projects that lower household bills and can be connected to the National Grid without difficulty, GB News reports, citing The Telegraph.
The condition, set out in last week's Budget, is expected to make it harder for the government to approve new offshore wind farms and puts pressure on Labour's 2024 manifesto pledge to produce 95% of Britain's electricity from clean sources by 2030. People close to Ed Miliband, who championed the target, are said to have opposed the change.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh acknowledged that delivering clean power while bringing down bills would be difficult. A government spokesman said ministers remained committed to clean power by 2030 and pointed to £110bn of private investment announced in clean energy over the past two years.
