Convicted murderer who took law classes at McGill returned to custody

·

Jeffrey Ewert, a convicted murderer who had been taking law classes at McGill University in Montreal, is back in custody, CTV News reports.

Correctional Service Canada said it had issued a warrant suspending his conditional release and that he had returned to custody while his case is assessed in more detail. It did not say which conditions led to the decision, citing an active case.

Ewert was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted murder over two attacks on young women in British Columbia in 1984. His presence on campus since the start of the semester had divided students, with rival petitions calling for him to be banned and to be allowed back. His lawyer did not comment.
