The Communist Party of India formed a human chain in New Delhi on Tuesday to demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, over the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, The Hindu reports.
The chain ran from the party's headquarters, Ajoy Bhawan, to ITO. The party alleges the nationwide revision, known as SIR, has stripped citizens of their votes, and wants it halted at once. Its general secretary, D. Raja, said Kumar had lost public confidence and that his remaining in post threatened the credibility of elections.
The protest came a day after the Election Commission, Kumar and the two other election commissioners filed a joint affidavit of nearly 250 pages in the Supreme Court. They argued that any attempt to restrain the chief commissioner would be unlawful, and that he can be removed only through the same impeachment process as a Supreme Court judge.
