The Democratic Alliance mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, has warned voters that backing smaller parties could leave the city with a coalition government, a week before South Africa's municipal elections on 4 November, Daily Maverick reports.
Hill-Lewis put up the first of the party's new posters, carrying the slogan "Don't risk coalition chaos", on Tuesday. He said the DA's internal polling put it at 51 to 52 per cent in the city, which he called too close for comfort, and argued that split votes could let the ANC and EFF take control.
Independent polls give the DA between 46 and 56 per cent. Its share in the city fell from 66.6 per cent in 2016 to 58.3 per cent in 2021. Smaller parties such as the Patriotic Alliance and ActionSA are campaigning hard for DA voters.
