Argentina's government will send no official message from President Javier Milei congratulating Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election in Brazil, his spokesman Adrián Ravier said on Tuesday, according to the Buenos Aires Times.
Ravier said the government had noted Sunday's result but that Milei was not a hypocrite, citing deep ideological differences. He claimed Lula had made no gesture when Milei won in 2023, although the paper notes Lula did publicly acknowledge the result on X at the time and wished the incoming government success.
Milei and El Salvador's Nayib Bukele are so far the only Latin American leaders not to recognise Lula's win publicly. Ravier insisted the snub would not harm relations, saying diplomacy, trade and cooperation within the Mercosur bloc would continue as normal between the two neighbours.
