Democratic leaders have closed ranks around Abdul El-Sayed, their Senate candidate in Michigan, a day before the US midterm elections, after Congresswoman Haley Stevens endorsed his Republican opponent, Al Jazeera reports.
Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed in August, backed Mike Rogers following weeks of disputes over US support for Israel. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called her move a despicable betrayal, and Michigan's Democratic Party chairman said she did not speak for the wider community. President Donald Trump welcomed the endorsement at a rally in Iowa.
All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are being contested on Tuesday, along with 36 governorships. Democrats are hoping to win control of both chambers of Congress, with the cost of living a central campaign issue.
