More buses and cars will be allowed on Denali National Park's single road after the Interior Department and National Park Service set a seasonal daily limit of 160 permitted vehicles, KTOO reports via Alaska Beacon.
The change replaces a seasonal total of 10,512 vehicles — about 100 a day — from the Saturday before Memorial Day to about a week after Labor Day. Officials say 160 matches the maximum in the 2012 vehicle management plan and follows a 2025 executive order to review recreation limits.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the rule expands access while protecting the landscape. Alaska's travel industry backed a managed increase, but the state opposed the draft, citing outdated science and risks to residents and subsistence users. The full 92-mile road is due to reopen next year after landslide repairs.
