EU to press Canada and UK for more Ukraine funding to close €70bn gap

·

The European Union plans to urge Canada and the UK to increase their financial support for Ukraine, which faces a funding shortfall of about €70 billion next year, Politico Europe reports, citing EU officials and diplomats. Brussels intends to raise the issue at the EU-Canada summit on 29 and 30 October and the EU-UK summit on 20 November.

The EU has committed a €90 billion loan for 2026 and 2027, but expected contributions of around €45 billion from partners including Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Norway have been slow to arrive. Officials stressed the push was not a criticism of London or Ottawa. The UK says it has committed £25 billion to Ukraine, while Canada has pledged €5.4 billion in military aid and €8.2 billion in financial support.
