US fighter jets intercepted a light aircraft that strayed into a no-fly zone above the city of Clemson in South Carolina on Wednesday as President Trump was holding a rally nearby, CBS News reports.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command, Norad, said F-16s were sent shortly after 5.30pm local time to deal with a general aviation plane that had breached a temporary flight restriction. The aircraft was shadowed until it landed safely at a nearby airfield. Norad said pilots who break such restrictions can be met by federal authorities and face enforcement action.
Mr Trump was at Clemson University to support Darline Graham's Senate campaign. Similar interceptions have taken place around several recent presidential events as campaigning for the November midterms intensifies, including over Cincinnati last weekend and in Chicago in September. Air Force officials have urged pilots to check flight restriction notices before taking off.
