German federal police have arrested a Ukrainian citizen in Brandenburg on suspicion of spying for a Russian intelligence service, the Kyiv Independent reports, citing Germany's federal prosecutors.
The suspect, named only as Vadym Y., was detained in the Oder-Spree district a week after a warrant was issued. Prosecutors said he had been in contact with Russian intelligence through a go-between since at least July 2025 and gathered information about the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives, and about military staff and sites on Nato's eastern flank. Some of it was public, but he is also accused of approaching people working in the European defence industry.
The arrest came a day after reports that Germany's armed forces had for the first time rated the threat of Russian sabotage against their troops and bases as significant, the second-highest level.
