Jensen Huang says Nvidia sees no memory glut coming by 2029

·

Nvidia's chief executive, Jensen Huang, has played down fears of a memory chip oversupply, telling CNBC he does not expect a glut by 2029 despite a sharp fall in memory company shares over the past week.

Speaking at Nvidia's GTC conference in Berlin, Huang said demand for memory would keep growing because computers can always make use of more, and that high-bandwidth memory would be needed for years. Nvidia also plans to keep using large amounts of the low-power memory found in phones in its data centre systems.

The sell-off in shares of SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron followed a South Korean newspaper column warning that new supply could flood the market by 2029, and a design announcement from China's CXMT. Asked about working with CXMT, Huang said Nvidia was open-minded and that most of the industry relied on Chinese suppliers somewhere.
