Musk’s Starlink clash with Ukraine exposes how few alternatives exist

·

Elon Musk's dispute with Ukraine over Starlink has highlighted how heavily Kyiv's forces depend on one satellite internet provider, and how little competition there is, CNBC reports.

Ukrainian officials said on 14 October that SpaceX had imposed speed limits on Starshield, its government version of Starlink, without warning, cutting connections to drones and aircraft flying faster than 100mph. The Wall Street Journal later reported that Musk personally ordered the changes after discussing them with President Donald Trump, who has denied any involvement.

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers has called for an investigation, and the consumer group Public Citizen warned that one person should not be able to cut a country's military communications. CNBC says rival satellite networks are not yet able to match Starlink's capacity or coverage, leaving Ukraine and other governments with few ready substitutes.
