Update: Elections Alberta misses 48-hour deadline to count referendum ballots

·

Elections Alberta has failed to finish counting the province's referendum ballots within its 48-hour deadline, CTV News reports.

The last polling station closed late on Monday, giving officials until late on Wednesday to complete the count. By early on Thursday, about 19.4 million ballots had been counted, with 97 per cent of voting locations reporting. The agency said its teams were working around the clock but it would not estimate when the count would be finished, adding that despite more than 47,000 workers it had not been possible to meet the target.

Each voter was given ten ballots, with questions on immigration, constitutional reform and whether Alberta should leave Canada. All the ballots are being counted by hand. Official results, including turnout, are due on 29 October.
