Twenty electrical engineers from the Philippines who were detained after a police raid at a site run by steelmaker SSAB in Sweden have been freed, The Local Sweden reports. The men had been held at a Migration Agency detention centre since 9 October, when police and several government agencies said they lacked permission to live and work in Sweden and would be deported.
Bert Maes, a Dutch lawyer who arranged their posting, said an appeal had succeeded and the removal orders and entry bans had been cancelled. He argued the workers held valid Dutch residence permits and were entitled to work in Sweden under the EU's posted workers rules, called their detention unlawful and said he would seek damages. Swedish police had earlier said they believed the EU rules were being misused.
