A police officer in Lauderhill, Florida, has been charged with using a dead man's identity to take over his home after finding him dead during a welfare check, The Guardian reports.
According to the Broward sheriff's office, Brian Sguros, 35, was among officers who found Dennis West dead of natural causes in July 2022. Investigators allege he then told the medical examiner he was Mr West's friend and that he had no family, which was untrue, paid bills in the dead man's name and used his identity to obtain a building permit. He allegedly spent over $210,000 renovating the house and used police databases to look up Mr West's personal details.
It reportedly came to light in 2025 when a firm that bought the house from Mr West's heirs found him there. He was bailed after a court appearance on Wednesday.
