A man now in his 30s is preparing to sue the Western Australian government, alleging he was sexually abused by a guard at the now-closed Rangeview youth detention centre in Perth when he was 12, The Guardian reports. In sworn affidavits, the man, given the pseudonym Aaron, says a youth justice officer who had promised to protect him from violence assaulted him on two occasions in the early 2000s. His lawyer, Peter Subramaniam of Chamberlains Law Firm, says the claim alleges negligence and a breach of the state's duty of care causing physical and psychiatric harm. Former detainees quoted in the report also allege that boys as young as 10 were taken behind the centre's buildings and beaten. Aaron separately alleges abuse at Banksia Hill detention centre in 2005, which is not part of the legal action.
