Five people were killed during a police operation against armed criminal groups in Egypt in which more than 250kg of drugs were seized, The National reports, citing the country's Interior Ministry. The ministry said the haul, which also included 42,000 tablets and 76 weapon parts, was worth 155 million Egyptian pounds, or about $2.9 million. It said the raids took place in three areas and that those killed had previously been sentenced for crimes including murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery and firearms offences. Several other suspects were arrested. The ministry did not say what drugs had been found. Last month an Egyptian court sentenced a television presenter and 11 others to death for running a synthetic drugs ring.
