Yasuo Fukuda, who served as Japan's prime minister in 2007 and 2008, has died at the age of 90, The Japan Times reports. His son announced on Monday that he died on Thursday.
The son of former prime minister Takeo Fukuda, he became Japan's first second-generation premier when he took over from Shinzo Abe in September 2007. He worked to improve relations with China, hosting President Hu Jintao on a state visit in 2008, and chaired that year's G8 summit in Hokkaido, where leaders set a goal of at least halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
At home his government secured compensation for people infected with hepatitis C through contaminated blood products. He retired from politics in 2012.
