North Korea has placed a self-propelled howitzer in clear view near the border with South Korea, as the two sides trade accusations at the UN, according to a Reuters report carried by Daily Maverick.
A Reuters witness at a South Korean observatory on Monday also saw armoured vehicles with guns pointed south and North Korean soldiers building fences inside the Demilitarised Zone. An expert called the open display of artillery highly unusual.
In a letter to the UN Security Council, Pyongyang accused Seoul of fabricating a landmine blast in the DMZ on 21 September and warned of self-defence measures. South Korea had told the council the mine was planted by North Korean troops, breaching the armistice. Seoul's unification ministry said the letter repeated old positions; South Korea has proposed talks to ease tensions.
