The US military has barred vehicles made by Chinese carmaker BYD from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, citing security concerns, The Japan Times reports.
The restriction took effect on Monday and so far applies only to Kadena, one of the largest US Air Force bases in the region. US Forces Japan did not give a specific reason, but a spokesperson said base commanders could take lawful security measures against credible threats. It is unclear whether other US bases in Japan will follow.
Western governments have grown more wary of data collected by connected cars from Chinese brands. In June the Pentagon added BYD to its list of Chinese military companies. Kadena is also where a US Typhon missile system is being stored, a move that has angered Beijing.
