Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel prize-winning computer scientist often called a godfather of AI, has told The Guardian that it may turn out people would have done better without AI at all. The 78-year-old warned that a major AI-related incident, such as a brief collapse of financial or power systems, could happen within the next year or two.
Hinton said he was not a doomer and that AI could bring a wonderful future, but within a decade the world would learn whether it could manage the risks or face mass unemployment, inequality and social breakdown. He criticised the leaders of major AI companies, saying he did not trust OpenAI's Sam Altman at all and that Altman, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk understood the dangers but put money first. He was speaking before a screening of a documentary featuring him and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis.
