China's Communist Party has pledged to crack down on officials who avoid conflict and ignore wrongdoing to protect their careers, as it steps up its anti-graft campaign before senior posts are reshuffled in 2027, the South China Morning Post reports. Such officials are known in Chinese as lao hao ren, or old nice persons.
The commitment is set out in the resolution passed when the fifth plenum of the party's 20th Central Committee ended last week after four days. According to the paper, the document signals that a culture of passive self-preservation among cadres, in which colleagues turn a blind eye to misconduct, will no longer be tolerated. The plenum also emphasised internal discipline and political loyalty. The party is due to hold its next national congress in 2027, when senior leadership positions will be decided.
