Google says Gmail and Photos data linked to its AI tools may be used for ads

·

Google has changed its privacy policy so that data from Gmail, Drive and Google Photos may be used to personalise adverts for people who connect those services to its AI features, The Verge reports.

The policy previously said Google would not use those services for personalised ads. Since 16 October it adds an exception for users who choose to make that data available to other Google services that support personalised advertising. That covers people who have linked their accounts to AI Mode and other Search tools through the Personal Intelligence feature.

Google says advertisers do not see the content of those services or details such as names and email addresses, and that ads are not based on sensitive categories such as health or religion. Users can disconnect apps from Personal Intelligence or switch off personalised recommendations in Search settings. The change was first spotted by Android Authority.
