HSC biology exam on koalas and super salmon wins praise from NSW students

·

Students in New South Wales came out of this year's HSC biology exam in good spirits, with some calling it the easiest biology paper they had sat, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. More than 20,500 students took the three-hour exam, which covered infectious diseases, reproduction and biotechnology through a series of animal-themed questions on topics such as koala IVF, bacteria in dead lizards, rabbit breeding and genetically modified salmon.

Biology teacher Rohan Isaac said it was a good paper that pushed students to analyse and evaluate rather than simply recall facts. He pointed to a question asking how social, economic and cultural factors might shape attitudes to eating gene-modified salmon. Students told the paper the questions were clearer and less wordy than they had feared from the NSW Education Standards Authority.
