Indonesia cuts gas exports to Singapore as row over wildfire haze escalates

·

Indonesia reduced natural gas supplies to Singapore on Saturday, saying it needed to prioritise demand at home, the South China Morning Post reports. The move comes as the two neighbours trade criticism over smoke drifting across the region from wildfires in Borneo and Sumatra.

Djoko Siswanto, head of the state upstream regulator SKK Migas, said exports would fall by 31 million standard cubic feet a day in total, with 15 million cut from Natuna in the Riau Islands and 16 million from Sumatra. He said the aim was to keep domestic gas supply for electricity reliable.

President Prabowo Subianto has hit out at what he called countries that like to insult Indonesia over the haze, without naming any. Singapore relies on piped gas from Indonesia for part of its power generation, so the cut adds an energy dimension to the dispute.
