Canada's Industry Minister, Mélanie Joly, says she will not meet the chief executive of Cleveland-Cliffs, Lourenco Goncalves, until the US company sets out a concrete plan and timetable to bring back laid-off workers at its Stelco steel mills, Global News reports.
Joly accuses the Ohio-based firm of breaking six binding undertakings it gave when Ottawa approved its takeover of Stelco in 2024, including a five-year promise to keep unionised staffing at the same level. She said the government could go to court, seek financial penalties or require Stelco to be sold.
Cleveland-Cliffs denies the allegations. In a statement, Goncalves said the company had honoured its commitments and in some areas gone further. He blamed imports of galvanised steel for the pressure on the Hamilton operation and said Stelco had asked for the meeting to discuss restoring full employment.
