Juneau will introduce a seasonal sales tax next year after voters approved it in the municipal election, according to final results reported by Juneau public broadcaster KTOO. Two newcomers will join the Juneau Assembly: former deputy city manager Mila Cosgrove, who was unopposed in District 1, and retired housing developer Joyce Niven, who won District 2 by just under 660 votes over Malachi Thorington.
They replace Alicia Hughes-Skandijs and Christine Woll. Incumbent Paul Kelly kept his area-wide seat with more than 60% of the vote. On the school board, incumbents Britteny Cioni-Haywood and David Noon were returned, finishing more than 1,800 votes ahead of challenger Christine Johnson. Niven said she wanted to help make Juneau an affordable place to live, while Kelly said the result showed voters approved of his work.
