Kenya confirms eighth Ebola case as outbreak spreads from DR Congo

·

Kenya has confirmed its eighth case of Ebola, a 49-year-old man who worked as a patient attendant and is thought to have been exposed to the country's first case, Al Jazeera reports.

Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth told Citizen TV the man was the only positive result among 38 people tested on Sunday. Four more cases were reported on Saturday, three of them health workers who had treated Kenya's first patient, a man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and died in a Nairobi hospital on 5 October.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment. The DRC has recorded at least 9,400 cases and more than 4,500 deaths since May, its deadliest outbreak on record, and says the virus has now reached an eighth province, North Ubangi.
