Music publishers say AI was trained on Kylie Minogue songs as Australia weighs copyright

·

The International Confederation of Music Publishers says AI models have already been trained on music by Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave and other Australian acts without payment, and has urged Canberra not to bow to tech companies pressing for looser copyright rules, The Guardian reports.

The body, which represents Sony, Warner and Universal among thousands of publishers, says Australia appears to be the only one of dozens of countries approached by AI firms that is considering weakening its law. Its managing director, John Phelan, accused the companies of using threats to withhold investment to pressure policymakers.

Members of a parliamentary committee on AI this week asked the government to examine copyright settings while keeping creators in control and paid. The ICMP says Google's Gemini could reproduce lyrics by Minogue, G-Flip and Cave, challenging industry claims that models are not trained on Australian content.
