Leigh Hoffman takes sprint silver as Lavreysen wins 23rd world title in Shanghai

·

Australian cyclist Leigh Hoffman finished second in the men's individual sprint at the UCI Track World Championships in Shanghai, losing the final to the Netherlands' Harrie Lavreysen, ABC News reports. Lavreysen won the event for the eighth year running, taking his record 23rd world title.

Hoffman, from Whyalla in South Australia, was the fastest qualifier and beat Japan's Kaiya Ota in the semi-final. He led early in the first race of the final but lost speed after drifting off the racing line, and Lavreysen then won the second race from the front. Hoffman, who took bronze a year ago, called the result bittersweet. It was Australia's second medal of the championships, following silver in the men's team sprint, compared with five medals at last year's event.
