French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned what he called unacceptable and stupid remarks by several foreign leaders about the unrest that hit French cities at the weekend, Politico Europe reports.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Qatar on Wednesday, Macron rejected claims that France had been overrun by migrants and Islamists as completely false. The comments were widely seen as aimed at US President Donald Trump, who said this week that France was being conquered, looted and burned by migrants, jihadists and communists.
Hundreds of thousands of people marched peacefully across France over the cost of living and conditions in schools, but some protests descended into arson, looting and clashes with riot police. Politico notes that Trump has been using the French violence in his campaigning ahead of next month's US midterm elections.
