A man in his thirties has been arrested and charged with gross endangerment of the public after a fire in an apartment building in Haugesund, western Norway, killed one man early on Friday, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports. Police lawyer Cecilie Steen said the suspect, who was detained in another flat in the town at about 4.30am, had not yet been questioned.
Emergency services were called shortly after 2am to a fierce blaze in a second-floor flat, with flames coming out of the windows. The dead man was found at about 2.30am, and his relatives have been informed. Ten residents were evacuated and the local council arranged accommodation for them.
Firefighters had the fire under control by about 3.15am. Police said it was too early to say what caused it and that they were continuing to investigate.
