Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson and Act leader David Seymour clashed over a campaign visit to a gang in a televised minor-party leaders' debate, the NZ Herald reports. Seymour questioned why anyone would go to the Mongrel Mob and talk about restoring its mana, and Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong called engaging with gangs during the campaign inappropriate.
The debate, moderated by Ryan Bridge, also featured NZ First leader Winston Peters; Te Pāti Māori withdrew after the death of co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer's mother. Seymour and Peters repeatedly targeted Wong, with Seymour attacking Opportunity's plan to end KiwiSaver withdrawals for first-home buyers and calling its tax plan disgraceful. Wong defended a land tax and citizen's income. Peters, discussing the anti-smacking law, said he had deserved the smackings he received as a child.
