Much of New Zealand can expect warm, settled weather at the start of Labour Weekend, but a cold front is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the South Island on Monday, 1News reports.
MetService said dry north-westerly winds would push temperatures up to 28C in Christchurch on Saturday, with Napier at 27C and Hastings at 28C on Labour Day, and highs of 25C to 27C from Kaikōura to Dunedin. Showers are likely in western and some inland parts of the North Island.
The meteorologist Dom Barry described Monday's front as a "spring doozy", and MetService said rain and wind warnings could follow for southern and western areas. Earth Sciences New Zealand said parts of Northland and the area around Gisborne and East Cape were already unusually dry.
